I am Juliana an engineer by training specialized in environmental water modelling. I am passionate about climate change, modelling and water.
Originally from Medellin, Colombia, I hold a bachelor’s degree in petroleum engineering from Universidad Nacional de Colombia. My undergraduate education focused on technical aspects of the oil and gas production specialising in reservoir simulation from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. I have research experience in flow in porous media, fluid mechanics and numerical and mathematical models .
I followed a master’s degree in environmental modeling from the Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague. I am currently pursuing my Ph.D. in applied bioclimatology at Mendel University in Brno, the Czech Republic.
I am also a feminist, who is committed to enable the changes that academic and scientific community need towards equality, diversity and inclusion. Alongside my academic career, I am interested in creating a wider impact on climate change science communication to reconcile the non-scientific communities and stakeholders around this topic especially in my home country Colombia. I would like to contribute to the democratization of knowledge and bring to the discussion climate change from a scientific perspective, collaboratively with youth and vulnerable communities.
I am research assistant at the Global Change Research Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences and a researcher at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Vienna. My research currently focuses on on understanding water systems’ efficiency under future climatic and socio-economic changes, in a way that they can span the demands in agriculture and other ecosystem services.
I am currently using the Global Biosphere Management Model – GLOBIOM as my main tool to carry out climate change analysis on agriculture and land-use based sectors, additionally I also worked with hydrological and agroclimatological models to understand better the biophysical response of ecosystem services under climatic variability and extreme weather events.
Since the beginning of my career, I have risen to the challenge of being a woman scientist in a field where gender disparities persist. What has motivated me to be an active part of the change towards an inclusive and fair scientific community with women and historically marginalized communities.
I believe that female-to-female cooperation is crucial in amplifying women scientists’ work, boosting their careers, and increasing representativeness in leadership positions to achieve parity and break down the structural and cultural barriers that women today face in science.
I am convinced that working for the full participation and professional development of women other diversities in science contributes at all levels to the full development of institutions, communities, and countries, especially in these moments when humanity faces unprecedented challenges.
I enjoy working and collaborating with scientists, students, and organisations that share my research interests and aspiration to work for an inclusive and fair scientific community with women and historically marginalized communities.
We can cooperate in research projects and joined proposals related to climate change, hydrology, agroclimatology and and fluid dynamics. I specially would like to support Latinx scientist and women scientist to keep growing in STEM.
